My original pitch was based on the technique of Match of the Day, where a presenter presents highlights of games in a Sunday League called Manchester and Cheshire League, with graphics page of the league and recent scores, after some feedback, I came up with the conclusion that this idea won't attract a big audience, therefore came up with this new idea that hopefully appeals to a larger audience:

Pitch

My VT will be on the sports section, but the story will be based on the aspect of Sunday league referee’s receiving foul and abusive remarks during the games from both players and fans. This has been going on in Sunday leagues a lot over the past years, but recently been getting worse every year, there is becoming a shortage in referee’s and less younger generations getting into refereeing purely on this matter.

The past couple of years, referee’s have been receiving abuse from players and fans for believing the referee had made the wrong decisions, but in more recent times, this matter is getting out of hand with one referee complaining to the FA officials to help put a stop to it all, http://www.sundaymercury.net/news/midlands-news/2012/02/19/midlands-ref-calls-for-an-end-to-sunday-league-abuse-66331-30362434/[1] In some cases family, race, sexuality and physical appearance get used against referees when things don’t go the player’s way. The aim of my VT is to help bring this sort of behavior to a stop and to help get the topic more limelight to fully put a stop to it.

I intend to get an interview with a Sunday league referee who currently referees some Manchester and Cheshire League games, I’ll try find out how they feel about this, if they think there is any way of cutting it out, how often they referee, is it a job or a hobby and how their sanctions are enforced if a player does abuse referees.

Unsigned and defined by The Manchester College

This show will be solely based on the live performances of several artists and bands. Each artist will play one or two songs of their choice, preferably their own song. Each performer will then have a brief interview; the interview will be as informal as it can be due to the target audience being fairly young. There will be an intro to the music show, which will be filmed prior to the live show and edited in final cut pro. The show will consist of performances, interviews, ad breaks and a final outro. We will aim to keep it informal, interesting and will use channels such as MTV as a guide, as this has a desired target audience we will intend to attract. The title of the show is “Unsigned and defined” by The Manchester College. The artists are from the Lever St campus where as the filming side of the show are from Fielden campus.

In the opening 2 minutes of the show, it will consist of a 30 second intro created by the Fielden students, the 30 second intro will be made up with lots of various shots. The shots are going to be related to music. After the intro, there will be a more informative introduction by one of our presenters, introducing the show, introducing the artists and also talking a bit about the show and how it gives the musicians chance to get their music out there with the likes of YouTube, ustream and other places musicians can get the chance to get noticed. After this intro, the presenter will name the musician and inform us that they are performing next. At this point, we will stop for a break, which will be overplayed by a pre created animation, this will leave the audience wanting to watch the musician and will stay to watch them, in the mean time the artist will be having sound checks so they are ready to perform after the break.

The key part of the plot, is that the musicians that are performing are unsigned and part of a music college in the centre of Manchester, this keeps the show rolling as there are several performers on the day, and it’s all live. There is going to be a presenter that speaks after each performance, whilst the performer gets ready for the interview. The interview is going to be informal and stood up, the reason I have gone with this is because if MTV or any other music show has a live performance, for example “The MOBO awards” after the live performance, or after receiving an award, the performer is stood up whilst having an interview. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGj0vmn6_Rs&feature=fvst[1]

Seen as this isn’t an outside live shoot, like a concert or gig, we can’t use shots of audiences, which a lot of live multi cam music shoots do, they show the performance whilst showing some shots of audiences too. In this case, we will have to fill this part up with different varied shots, if possible. Some varied shots we could use would interest and intrigue the viewers rather than just constantly watching the musician, for example, if they were going through a solo guitar section, it wouldn’t be necessary to have a face shot whilst he’s playing the guitar. Another influence is Radio 1 Live Lounge, there are some shots in this video, where they show cameramen in the shots, I don’t know if this is a side we are going to take, but it certainly can be an option. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1u_Bg13VeM[2]

I have noticed, in this video, they use a lot of quick straight cuts from different cameras, this gives it a good luck, and keeps the eyes interested, instead of long shots of the same thing.

Due to only having 3 live cameras on our show, there is limitation to how many quick shots we can do, plus also depending on the cameramen skills. I intend to space out the 3 cameras so that they have a variety of shots they can offer, such as panning, tilting, zoom in, pull focus, close ups etc. We have the option to have one of the cameras on either a track or dolly, the only difference is that with a track, we can only go in one fixed direction, where as, a dolly can go in circles and bends which will be able to offer the director more varied shots. The negative of using a dolly, is it doesn’t move in a smooth motion. The studio that we are going to be using, has the studio, where the artists will be playing, and next to it, is the gallery, where the vision mixer, director and sound tech are, so the director and vision mixer can hear and understand each other.

In conclusion, i believe the layout of our music show will be unique, interesting and at the same time, a good way to get the musicians performances out to the general public.

Production Diary Week 6

Today on the 20th of March we are continuing with our treatment and i will hopefully try get feedback off peter so that i can improve my work and aim for a higher marking band. I have today inserted a reference which agree's with a point that i made in it, I have also harvard referenced the source, due to me not really doing a harvard reference in my first semester treatment, this is an area i aim to improve on, and will hopefully help me receive a higher mark.
We are also preparing for our presentations that we have to present to the tutors, the presentation is about the layout, theme and studio settings on how we would like it to be. Even though one choice may not be chosen, the final idea will be based on everyones ideas and all put together to make the strongest layout, the best theme for the show etc. I am using Prezi as my presentation software, due to it being different from others who may be using Microsoft Powerpoint, also Prezi has more effects to offer, which can make my presentation stand out further.

Production Diary Week 5

On the 13th of March, we carried on with our treatment work, we got given a few websites to help us structure the treatment correctly, these sites were very helpful, as my first semester treatment missed out a lot of information. http://www.ehow.com/how_4854252_write-television-treatment.html
This is the main website i am using to help me out, the only problem with this is that its mainly talking about a drama show, where as our show is a live multi camera broadcast. On the other hand, it is very useful and informative.

Production Diary Week 4

On the 6th of March, we all put ideas together for new and necessary props that could be used for our live show. It had to tie in with the genre of music that was going to be played, for example, a drum set wouldn't fit in with the set if the artists wasn't even using the drums. Some examples we came up with was:

• Strobe lights
• Disco ball
• Retro instruments
• Smoke machine
• Different coloured lights (gels)

On the 13th of March, we were told to think of some studio sets for the live multi cam shoot, and the final set idea will consist of different ideas put together. We were also told to have a start on the treatment.

I have a few ideas for a studio set that will be effective, for example,

If we could get all the equipment I want, we could start off by having a smoke machine, with a bright white light shining on the back of the artist, so for the beginning few seconds you can't see the artist/s face but only the outline. Once the smoke clears out, the set becomes more clearer and can see the props and layout. Around the set, there are retro instruments around, for example, a retro handheld speaker, retro microphone and any other retro instruments we can get as long as its related to the music. We can also use gels to give off different colours for our stage, but i believe if we use too many colours, it can look a bit odd, where as if we only use 2 or 3 different colours, it will look better.
There are many ways we can set up the studio, we need to take into consideration on when the studio is going to be used, what audience we are targeting and what genre of music the bands/artist are playing.

Production Diary Week 2/3

On the 21tst of February, the class was told to go out and film some footage so it can be used and edited to create a 30 second into to the live music show. I wasn't in this lesson but everyone broke up into groups to shoot what they wanted to go into the intro.
On the 28th of February, the class got split into groups of 4/5 to edit the footage they filmed the pervious week. My group consisted of me, Andy, Nyasha and Luis. We had to edit the clips from everyones footage and make sure it is exactly 30 seconds, no longer, no shorter. We all put a fair amount of effort in, we all took part in the editing and deciding the clips to put in the intro and came up with a final edit:

There was a bit at the end of the timeline of Final Cut Pro which we forgot to delete off, so as you can see after the 30 second intro there is a long black wait then a small clip plays, this isn't any part of the edit but made a small mistake on not deleting this off the timeline. We thought for a long time to think of a backing track to play over the clips and decided to go with Gorillaz - Feel Good instrumental.

Production Diary Week 1

On the 14th of February the class was shown various creative composition photos that was nominated or won the Pulitzer prize, such as the photo taken during the Vietnam war where a napalm strike was dropped , the photo was taken by Nick Ut of a 9 year old girl running down a road with several other Vietnamese running for safety. We learnt how to create creative composition photos by using the rules for example rule of thirds and depth of field. We got set a task to find our own creative composition photo and talk about it on how it used the rules for creating a creative composition photo. I found a photo that was taken in 1991 of Pine St and Quincy St in San Francisco taken by Jose P Insern Comas.  This image uses low angle shot, depth of field and the rule of thirds.
